Basic Mittens

Needles: Size 4 and 6 DPNS
Yarn: Silk Twist, House Blend, Sashimi, Wild Thingor Singularity in Silk
Gauge: 5sts = 1"
Size: to fit an adult woman; 6.5" around hand, length is adjustable

***This pattern hasn't been tested yet. Please let me know if you notice any mistakes or have any questions about the pattern!***

Using smaller needles, cast on 40sts and join for working in the round. Place markers at beginning and center of round.
Knit in (k2,p1) rib for 1.5 inches.

Switch to larger needles and continue in stockinette until piece measures 4.5 inches from cast on.

FOR LEFT HAND:
Knit 12sts, slip next 8 sts onto waste yarn, cast on 8 sts using cable cast on. Knit to end of round.

FOR RIGHT HAND:
Slip 8 sts onto waste yarn, cast on 8 sts using cable cast on. Knit to end of round.

Continue in stockinette until mitten measures 1.5” less than desired finished length (or approximately 8” from cast on edge).

Decrease Round: SSK, knit until 2sts before marker, K2tog, slip marker, SSK, knit until 2sts before end of round, K2tog
Knit Round: knit all sts
Repeat these 2 rounds until 12 stitches remain (6 repeats total)

Finish off using Kitchener stitch.

Thumb
Remove thumb stitches from waste yarn and put back on DPN.

Rejoin yarn, knit 8 sts on needle, pick up and knit into the back of one stitch in corner of thumb opening, pm, pick up and knit 8 stitches in cast-on edge of thumb opening, pick up and knit into the back of one stitch in corner, pm, join for working in the round.

Work in stockinette stitch until thumb measures 3/4 inch less than desired length, or approximately 2”.

Decrease Round:SSK, knit until 2sts before marker, K2tog, slip marker, SSK, knit until 2sts before end of round, K2tog
Knit Round: knit all sts

Repeat these two rounds until 6 sts remain.
Finish off using Kitchener stitch.
