April 2009
The Unique Sheep's Yarn Spotlight for April:
Sashimi
Sashimi Dear Customer,

If our weather lately has been any indication, April is going to be full of sunshine, wind and rain this year. This transition month makes us want to wear sundresses and flip flops, but the cool, damp spring storms have us grabbing for shrugs and shawls to wrap our bare arms with! If you are like me, you are craving the soft, bright colors of Easter eggs and new flowers. What better way to celebrate than with Sashimi- a bamboo/wool blend yarn that is soft against bare skin, light as air and shines with all the colors of spring.
Yarn Properties

Color
Much like Sushi Socks, Sashimi takes the dye in a softer/ more subtle manner than the 100% superwash merino yarns. For this reason, we feel it looks best in semi-solids or subtle variegated colorways without too many different contrasts. Colors beside each other on the skein tend to blend during the dyeing process.
Insecta
Because of the bamboo content, this yarn has a great sheen. The sheen catches the light and makes the colors glow without being shiny.

Fiber Content
60% Merino- 40% Bamboo -- don't forget about all the great benefits of bamboo that we talked about in last month's newsletter!

Weight & Put Up
100g/ 276 yards

Wash & Care Instructions
The wool content in Sashimi is NOT superwash treated, so Sashimi must be washed by hand to prevent felting.
Pattern Recommendations
Sashimi's most notable quality is its softness, followed by its loftiness. This makes it a very light wearing fiber ideal for sensitive skin and warmer weather. While it is warm and snuggle when knit densely, when knit in an open lace pattern the bamboo allows the fiber to breathe and the loft lifts it away from the skin, making it perfect for spring items.

Quatrefoil Shrug
Quatrefoil Shrug
Just in time for Spring, we have re-released the new and improved Quatrefoil Shrug, now with more sizes. This is one of my personal favorites because I am one of those people that is always cold in stores and restaurants but then as soon as I go out in the sun I want my arms to be bare to soak up those rays. With this shrug, I can wear a camisole or short sleeved top and then cover up with the shrug if I get chilly!

Lepidoptera

Every time I wear this shawl I get so many compliments. Even non-knitters seem Lepidopterato recognize that its special. And knitters have to come up for a closer look-- they can't figure out how I got the color to change so nicely! The secret is in the yarn. This shawl is knit using a set of our Gradiance yarns that are dyed so that as you change from one skein to the next the colors flow into one another. This pattern is a perfect way to try our Gradiance yarns since it gives step by step instructions on making the color changes perfect!

Crochet Baby CardiganCrochet Baby Cardigan
The soft, squishiness of Sashimi is perfect for baby items. Our Crocheted Baby Cardigan can be worked up in Sashimi for a size fitting an 8-12 month old. Mom and Dad do need to be warned that Sashimi needs to be handwashed, but don't let that turn you off. The softness of Sashimi makes it worth the extra effort!

Sincerely,

Your Unique Sheep Dyers,
Laura Lough and Kelly Eells
